From the opening page of Ultimates 3, the image on the screen in the background of entangled bodies, one can clearly see this is not one of those Marvel titles to cater to younger audiences. However, from the art, one can also see that this book is indeed something special. Welcome back, Madureira. If you have not heard the name of Joe Madureira, if you know nothing of his awesomeness, then you were not reading Uncanny X-Men with me in the mid-90s. And you don't know what you were missing out on.
Well, he's back and better than ever.
As far as the story for Ultimates 3, you won't be let down there, either. Lots of action. Venom busts in on the Ultimates and it's up to Hawkeye, Wasp, Thor, Black Panther, and Valkyrie to subdue the beast. The only problem is, he catches them off guard so they're all a little dazed or unconscious.
Once Venom's out of the way, we learn some other interesting tidbits about our heroes: Captain America has issues and lacks social skills, Hank Pym is on medication for what looks like rabies, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are keeping it in the family, and Spider-Man will probably show up in the next issue. Oh, and there's a bullet that seems to do some zigzagging. I'm not exactly sure how that last part works out. Makes for a dramatic spread but the visuals here are at least just a little bit confusing.
Oh yeah, and did I mention a tri-fold cover featuring Magneto, Sabretooth, and the Brotherhood? And what's up with Venom? Whatever the answers, I'm going to be there to find out. You should be, too. This book is high on the recommend list, as much for the story as the art. Ultimate Spider-Man is a fun character, Sabretooth and Venom are great enemies. The ever-patriotic Captain America has never been so dark and brooding. This run of the "Ultimate Avengers" promises to be a great read, for new and old fans alike. Oh, and did I mention that the writer is none other than Jeph Loeb? Who? Hello!?! Teen Wolf, Jeph Loeb. Spiderman, Batman, X-Men, Wolverine, Superman Jeph Loeb. Heroes, Smallville, Lost Jeph Loeb. With a resume like this guy...and art better than any other comic...I mean, how can you say no? Go right now, it's not too late, and send Santa one last letter asking for this book. Ultimates 3. Better yet, ask for a subscription. But only if you're...12 and up. There is some sex talk, a little more blood and violence than most books I've seen lately, and other randomness we'll label "adult content." Not being a child, though, it's somewhat refreshing to find a book not catering to children. While the book does contain elements not suitable for the younger generation, I would hardly call this book unsuitable for the general reader. No nudity. No language. Just a good time. |
