My first taste of this fast footed, blue haired character was in 1993 on the Sega Genesis.  Just like the Super Mario Bros. games I would spend quite a few hours running through the multitude of adventures built in.  Having recently played, and poorly attempted, my first skirmish on Halo 3 we can definitely say that video games have come a long way since.
Just in the past year I've come back to Sonic the Hedgehog through my children.  They've collected the various Sonic game packs that contain the first 6 installments and they've beaten Sonic Heroes twice, but my oldest has become fascinated with the Sonic the Hedgehog Comic, or STH, which is written by Ian "Potto" Flynn and penciled by Tracy Yardley! through Archie Comics.
Since I personally don't have tons of experience with this particular series I figured I could pull in a little familial assistance through my 10 year-old son Chase.  Chase and I sat down and discussed the various plot points, surprise moments, and as he said, "really cool things" that occurred during this issue.
To give you some background, Sonic and friends are again battling Dr. Eggman. Or are they?  In the previous issue Sonic and Dr. Eggman formed a truce!  It looks like there are bigger problems happening on New Mobotropolis.  The awesome and terrible, Enerjak!  A being of apparently supreme power has come back from the past and is looking to create a major upheaval.

During this issue (Chapter One of the Enerjak Reborn story arc) Sonic and Tails are traveling to Angel Island to find their sometimes friend and durable fighting companion, Knuckles the Echidna to help fend off Enerjak.  Enerjak is rampaging across Planet Mobius, which has been revealed to be Earth in the year 14,016 A.D.  His first stop is at Cavem Canus, the Dingo headquarters where he exacts his furious judgment against the Dingoes and their leader, General Kage Von Stryker.  Enerjak then continues towards New Mobotropolis stopping to contend with the Frost and Fire Legions.  All the while, Sonic and Tails are still trying in vain to find Knuckles and get his much needed strength.
Everyone back at New Mobotropolis is watching Enerjak break through the Force field set up by NICOLE, the New Mobotropolis A.I. (artificial intelligence) and they are about to make a last stand.  Along with the Freedom Fighters and The CHAOTIX, Knuckles girlfriend, Julie-Su is ready to take down the one she blames for Knuckles demise.  This issue solves the question:  Who is Enerjak?  In the past it was an Echidna named Dimitri, but he's been reduced to a floating cybernetic head in a bubble.
Chase and I agree that the current storyline is very good.  There are interesting side stories that tie into the main storyline, but others that make you wonder what is going to happen, such as when Dr. Eggman will break the truce - because you know he will.  Some of the praises and recommendations that Chase has for those who would be interested in picking this issue up is the fact that you get to see a lot of different characters and different settings as compared to the usual stories of offer. He also thought that Enerjak, even though appearing as bad guy, has many cool powers and abilities.  Still he didn't like that Enerjak was really mean to the Dingoes.  Absolute power corrupts absolutely, huh?  Chase also posed a question regarding the evil Dr. Finitevus and what role he will play.  Another nice addition to the comic is the small second story at the end of the issue which helps explain a lot, but I won't spoil that for you.  You'll just have to find out.
Sonic the Hedgehog comes off as a children's or even a teenager's comic, but if you enjoy a good read with various anthropomorphic creatures, STH #181 is a good one to grab.
