Finding Iris Chang 2007/12/24 16:05
This thread discusses the Content article: Finding Iris Chang

I read The Rape of Nanking years ago, after seeing Chang interviewed on the subject of the Japanese occupation of Manchuria in WWII, and her passion for her subject compelled me to buy the book as soon as I could. It's a gut-wrenching read, even by genocide/democide standards (I've read a lot in that category).

Writers who work in the field of genocide studies (or other forms of human atrocity) have to take special care to "come up for air." I think Ms. Chang was trying to do just that, but she was a very ill person, and her singular devotion to her work probably didn't help matters.

It was and is a terrible blow to lose her. I'm anxious to read this book, as I felt a weird personal connection to Ms. Chang through that book and was looking forward to her book on the Bataan Death March.
