DVD Sales: 'Standard' Still Rules 2007/12/12 05:05
This thread discusses the Content article: DVD Sales: 'Standard' Still Rules

There's a joke in the original MEN IN BLACK that always earns a chuckle from me. It's when K is showing J around headquarters, and points out the little thumb-sized disc that will soon replaced CDs. "Looks like I'm gonna have to buy the White album again," says K.

On the shelf behind me sit 70 dvds--not meaning to brag, mind you--and this does not include the multiple discs included in the TV boxed sets. To replace all of these with a hi-def counterpart at the cost of, say, $20 a film, would force me into acts more desperate than when my wife and I were saving for our first apartment. And I will not resort to baloney and cheese again. Blu-Ray just isn't worth it.

I'm with you, Taj, for the same reasons. Also, having seen a movie on Blu-ray in a friend's home theater setup, I was impressed, but not so much that I'd run out and plunk down many ducats to upgrade everything in my own home. Since almost all the films I like and love probably won't ever be released on Blu-ray (and wouldn't benefit from the higher resolution and all the bells and whistles), what's the point?

Great reference from MIB, too!

Tho' I've upgraded to an LCD-HDTV as of last year, I'm satisfied with my "normal" setup and refuse to plunge into the Blu-Ray genre. (That's more my brother's thing, lol.)

I upgraded to a plasma HD myself, but like you, I'm fine with "normal" everything else. Every time I'm tempted to bite, I remind myself that something else will come along soon enough to make HD and Blu-Ray yesterday's news. In the meantime, though, it's interesting seeing how heated the arguments can get between advocates of either format. I was on a message board reading posts from both sides a couple of weeks back---you'd think these people were arguing about something really important, given all the invective that was getting thrown around! Yikes!
