James Taylor: One Man Band 2007/11/26 15:05
This thread discusses the Content article: James Taylor: One Man Band

This review was pretty helpful, but a few things stood out as just plain wrong: James Taylor is a baritone? No, he's not. He has a higher voice, with a folksy/bluesy inflection. He's actually an excellent blues singer, even though his hits were more folksy. The best comparison to his voice is Chris Rice. Does this make Chris Rice the Perry Como of Christian rock?

Thanks for the comments. I guess I simply put James into the baritone category because he certainly isn't a bass, and people usually think of tenors as 'high' Irish tenors, or 'Three Tenors' type of singers. For simplicity sake, that leaves the general area of 'baritone,' even though his range allows him to frequently go to the high-end of that range, and sometimes far beyond that, and into tenor territory.
I was afraid the Perry Como reference would be a bit vague. The whole idea is that Como was very, very relaxed in his manner - not exactly Joey Ramone, if you know what I mean.
You're right - Taylor's got the chops to sing blues, although (especially on the DVD performance) he seems to mock the concept of a HEAVY DUTY James Taylor blues delivery, and really displays how flexible his phrasing is, in the process.
