The City of Los Angeles is feeling the pinch of the Writers Guild of America's strike and the impasse between WGA and the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers (AMPTP) over contract negotiations, according to the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corp. Now in its seventh week, the strike has cost the regional economy more than $342 million in lost wages and customers for satellite businesses, such as restaurants, hotels, and personal service firms, according to EDC estimates. The EDC projects that the strike will cost about $220 million per month for each month it continues. At this point, the two sides aren't communicating, beyond sniping at each other in the media.
WGA is aiming at reaching agreements with individual production companies in lieu of a broader agreement, as the guild's negotiating committee chair, John Bowman, confirmed yesterday. An announcement between WGA and David Letterman's Worldwide Pants production company could be announced next week, among others.
