Since I tend to dabble more into music than anything else, I thought maybe it would be a helpful column this week for me to let you in on some of the better things I've been listening to lately:
Bruce Springsteen - Magic - If you haven't given The Boss a chance lately, this is a fantastic place to start, with his most impressive overall effort in a long time. "Long Way Home" and "Devil's Arcade" are the must hear tracks, with the latter being one of the best Springsteen songs ever. Magic is exactly what the artist has worked.
Foo Fighters - Echoes, Silence, Patience, Grace - Dave Grohl continues to climb the heap of rock artists and stakes his flag as the best every time a new album comes out. These guys, now entering their forties and becoming fathers, are still in their rock and roll prime. "The Pretender" is an absolute cutthroat track that just dares any other band to try to compete and "Come Alive" moves from serene to searing in just a few minutes.
Doveman - With My Left Hand I Raise The Dead - Doveman is the moniker of Thomas Bartlett, a one man show who creates folk-lite so minimal that it makes slower Sufjan tracks seem overbearing. Yet there's such a beauty to the card houses Bartlett creates that this might just be my favorite album thus far of 2007.
Wiretree - Bouldin - Again, acoustic minimal soundscapes are the flavor of choice here and Wiretree keeps things interesting with various instrumentation alongside simple, solid melodies. "Big Coat" is the best example here.
Barcelona - absolutes - Sweeping, epic choruses straight from Seattle mark this young band sure to make a name for themselves. The band's new album is straight from the Sleeping at Last family tree, so if you like one, you're sure to love this one. Give "Falling Out of Tree" one listen and tell me you're not hooked.
