Lots of big news came from today's big Paramount Pictures panel, and we have video from almost all of these, but here are the bullet points for those who want a quick run-down:
- A teaser trailer for Beowulf is now available online, which was shown to the crowd on large screens. The film blends live action performances with enhanced CGI characters and backgrounds to create a visual feast for the eyes and aims to, for the first time ever, truly do justice to the spirit of the Beowulf legend.
J.J. Abrams appeared very briefly to update the crowd on his untitled "giant monster" movie code-named Cloverfield. He promised that "real" trailers and the movie's actual title would be revealed in the coming months, but wasn't ready to provide any of that just yet. The movie has nearly wrapped initial filming and will soon move into post-production. The one thing he did reveal was the first teaser poster for the movie, which shows the Statue of Liberty without her head.
- According to creature designer Phil Tippet, The Spiderwycke Chronicles aims to do for fairy tale creatures like fairies and goblins, what Jurassic Park did for dinosaurs. A teaser trailer was shown that looked quite good.
- The best footage seen today of any kind came from Iron Man. Director Jon Favreau introduced it to the crowd before showing off finished footage of Robert Downey Jr. perfectly nailing the arrogant attitude of billionare industrialist Tony Stark. As the footage rolled, he was forced to take up the mantle of the heroic Iron Man, and it was truly a thrilling thing to behold. It was full of fast-paced quips and one-liners from Downey's Stark, proving that as everyone had hoped, he has been perfectly cast in the role. It ended with Iron Man soaring through the skies, outpacing a pair of fighter jets. Fan-freaking-tastic. This movie has definitely earned the buzz of the show at the moment.
- Karen Allen is reprising her best-known role as Marion Ravenwood in the upcoming fourth Indiana Jones movie. The announcement was made via a "live" feed from the set of the film, where Steven Spielberg, Harrison Ford, Ray Winstone ("Indy's sidekick in this one," according to Ford), and Shia LaBouf all greeted the Comic-Con audience with words of praise for the film and the script. Spielberg briefly stepped out of the picture only to return with a director's chair in hand, labeled "Marion Ravenwood." And Karen Allen, looking for all the world like she hasn't aged a single day since Raiders of the Lost Ark 26 years ago, came out and took her seat to great applause from the fans.
Finally, the old TV Star Trek theme song was played before the producers, writers, and director of the new Star Trek movie were brought out. Damon Lindelof and director J.J. Abrams were of course there and did most of the talking, though we still know nothing about the story. One thing we can confirm though is that it will involve the original roster of characters from the classic TV show. We know this because actor Zachary Quinto was introduced to the stage by Abrams, who called him "our Spock." But Abrams had one more surprise: Leonard Nimoy took the stage, after Abrams announced that he too would also be playing Spock one last time in the movie! Asked why he agreed to play Spock one more time, Nimoy replied that the script was fantastic, the director was great, and doing the movie was the "logical" thing to do.
