In case you hadn't noticed, the holiday season is upon us. Like a lot of you, my holiday funds are low, my motivation is high, my intentions are good, but my mall tolerance is dwindling. We went to the mall last night, actually, to spend a gift card we got for our anniversary. We decided to spend it on Christmas decorations, since we traditionally get something new every year and we're short on cash this year.

It's not difficult to distract me, and I am a champion procrastinator. When my husband and I first moved into this apartment, I was excited about the fact that we were going to turn our second bedroom into my office. Writers need a place where they can take themselves too seriously. I'll admit it -- the office made me feel like a true professional.

Ten years ago, I was a college freshman at David Lipscomb University in
Nashville, and I was at a benefit concert for Christ Academy with a
friend. Chris Rice -- brand new on the scene -- had just wrapped up.
Steven Curtis Chapman was about to take the stage. But before he did,
a concert promoter stood before the microphone and told a stunned crowd
that Rich Mullins had been killed in a car accident. Needless to say,
the rest of the concert was very emotional and Steven dedicated his
performance to Rich. Many tears were shed, onstage and off.

Just to inform those of you who don't know very much about me... I am a
semi-crazed, 16-year Amy Grant fanatic. If it weren't woefully bizarre
for a 28-year-old woman to cover her bedroom walls with Amy Grant
pictures, I certainly would. (Note: Framed, autographed pictures
hanging on the walls of your home office don't count!) I'm not saying
I'm immature or anything, but I have to confess that when I got her
"Time And Again" live CD for Christmas, I nearly needed a Valium to
calm down.

We didn't know who Annie was at first.
For as long as we had lived
in our apartment, Jim lived in apartment #1 with his teenage son. A
Jaguar-driving divorcee who served as a Mr. Fix-It around the complex,
Jim was kind and quick to help with anything we needed. Then, suddenly,
an older woman and a teenage boy appeared. At first we thought they
were visiting on the weekends, but it soon became apparent they were
living with Jim. To this day, I don't know what the relation is between
everyone living there, not that it really matters.

I would never diss self-help books, OK? They can be very valuable and helpful, and besides... I sort of wrote one. It would be like dissing my own child or something. My dear friend and mentor Shaunti Feldhahn is a Christian self-help guru, and I credit the contents of her book For Women Only with helping to save my own marriage some years ago. |
